PORCELAIN HISTORY

Brothers August and Conrad Bauscher brought porcelain to Weiden. They started in 1881 with 70 workers to produce solely hotel ware, which for the industry was absolutely new. Their idea was successful. Whether in Auerbach‘s Cellar in Leipzig, the Waldorf Astoria in New York, on the AIDA ships or in Hotel Burj Al Arab in Dubai, dining with Bauscher porcelain was and is in. It is stackable and resists the particular mechanical load in gastronomy. Bauscher is one of the three brands of BHS tabletop AG since 1998/99.

Another porcelain company in Weiden is Christian Seltmann GmbH. After Christian Wilhelm Seltmann had been active as a factory manager in Arzberg and, together with his brother Johann, in the common porcelain factory in Vohenstrauß, he founded his own business in Weiden in 1910, which permanently grew, particularly, after he had bought the porcelain factories of Krummennaab (1939) and Erbendorf (1940).

Since 1957, the company holds the majority of shares of Königlich privilegierte Porzellanfabrik Tettau (Royal Privileged Porcelain Factory Tettau). In the 1990s, Seltmann acquired traditional businesses from Thuringia, by taking over Aelteste Volkstedter Porzellanmanufaktur, Unterweiß-
bacher Werkstätten der Porzellankunst, Porzellanmanufaktur Scheibe Alsbach, and Porcelain Manufactory Plauen.

The Porcelain Factory Bavaria Ullersricht, rather an unknown company, between 1926 and 1930 mainly produced household, hotel and fire-resistant porcelain. It went bankrupt in 1931 because of economic problems.
