PORCELAIN HISTORY

Speichersdorf became a porcelain site when the Thomas am Kulm Porcelain Factory was established there in 1958/1960. It was a subsidiary of former Rosenthal AG which in 1908 had bought up Thomas Porcelain Manufactory in Marktredwitz.

A Central Stock was established in 1990, dispatching the porcelain brands Rosenthal, Hutschenreuther and Thomas all over the world. On the occasion of the subsidiary’s 25th anniversary in June 1985, Italian artist Marcello Morandini created a new large colour composition along the factory’s 220 m long wall. With its sophisticated layout of the line and exciting colour scheme, the façade seems to have a three-dimensional structure.

PLACES TO VISIT

The ideal starting or arrival point for hiking or biking tours is mill Tauritzmühle, which is part of the Fichtelgebirge’s marked walking paths system. If you are lucky, you may see the beaver family settling in Tauritzbach creek near the mill. There is also an insect hotel. And there is the mountain Rauher Kulm, of volcanic origin, southeast of Speichersdorf. From the observation tower on the mountain’s top (682 m) enjoy a magnificent panoramic view over northern Upper Palatinate and the Fichtelgebirge mountains.
