China history in Hohenberg a. d. Eger

C.M. Hutschenreuther

In the year 1814 Carlus Magnus Hutschenreuther (1794-1845) established in Hohenberg an der Eger the first china manufactory in Northern Bavaria and began his first works with china in the rooms of the castle of Hohenberg. In 1819 he purchased the area „Freundschaft“ (amity) and furnished his production facility.

The company C.M. Hutschenreuther was known for its patterns with golden etch edge and the bright colour of the cobalt glaze. In particular, royal houses and statesmen liked his products. The company with a long tradition is continued today as C.M. Manufactur für Bone China GmbH & Co. KG by the company Dibbern.
His son Lorenz Hutschenreuther (1817-1886) continued the china tradition and established in 1857 his own china factory in Selb. Since 2000 the lion label has belonged to Rosenthal AG.

Bone China
About 1750 a procedure according to Chinese standards was developed, where bone ash was mixed into the china mass consisting of feldspath, kaoline and quartz. Bone china (also soft paste china) is more transparent and less fragile than the known hard porcelain. German companies have produced only since the eighties bone china. Since the year 1989 the noble „bone chine“ has also been produced in Hohenberg a. d. Eger.

Interesting Things

In the year 1222 the Ministeriale Bertholdus de Honberch (the town was named after him) was first mentioned in records. The essential parts of the castle Hohenberg have its origin in the 12th and 13th century. Today it is one of the best preserved castles in the Fichtelgebirge. Nearby several restaurants are situated, where regional cuisine is offered on local china. For health-conscious persons a walk to the marked spring with acidulous mineral water (Carolinenquelle) is recommended.

Back to the 13th century

Let yourself be carried into the Middle Ages by the Hohenberger Knighthood. Annually on the weekend after Pentecost the castle Hohenberg is the impressive backdrop for an event that can be equalled by no other.
